The
Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness is pleased to introduce
the eleventh edition of The University of Texas Health Science Center at
Houston’s annual Fact Book. As with previous editions, we have a few data-related
caveats.
Fact Book 2003 covers fiscal years 1993 through 2002 wherever possible and
appropriate. Titles and data headers will clearly indicate the time frames
that follow. There are some student, faculty and employee tables as well
as budget tables that reflect FY2003 data as it is available and timely.Text
sections, including those in the Institutional Profile, Education (International
Relations) and Institutional Development (University Advancement) tabs reflect
most current information available as of press time.
The year 2002 marked a special anniversary for UT-Houston – 30 years as
the most comprehensive academic health center in Texas. To commemorate the
university’s 30th anniversary, we devote this edition of the Fact Book to
the rich history of not only UT-Houston as a whole, but also the individual
schools that comprise the university. We hope you enjoy this glimpse back
in time.
The Fact Book is truly a university-wide effort. We would like to take this
opportunity to thank each of the individuals who graciously provided data
for – or helped proofread – Fact Book 2003. We ask our readers to pay particular
attention to the sources listed throughout the book. Without these individuals’
efforts this book simply would not exist.
Please accept our most heartfelt thanks for a job well done!
Special thanks to:
Arturo Rodriguez for supplying the Dental Branch photographs
Manny Gonzales at the HAM-TMC Library for the 1955 TMC photograph
Linda Brown in Public Affairs for the various photographs throughout the
book
Henny Van Dijk in the Graphic Communications Group for the current TMC photograph
Fact Book 2003 is disseminated primarily to an internal audience of UT-Houston
academic and managerial administrators and faculty. Our primary aim has
always been to compile useful and interesting information about the university
in a format that provides historical context and lends itself to trend analysis
for the use and convenience of administrators, faculty and staff.
