Biological Safety Manual

Catalogs
The schools’ catalogs are official publications of UT-Houston that contain general information about the official calendar, admission and progression requirements, tuition and fees, registration, degree and certificate programs, courses and student services. New editions of the individual school catalogs are published biennially on-line and in hard copy. Limited numbers of printed catalogs are available in the deans’ and registrar’s offices.

Chemical Safety Manual

CORE (Catalog of Research Expertise)
CORE is a directory of faculty profiles that provides descriptions of intramural and extramural research-related activities, school and departmental assignments, campus addresses, educational background and lists of scientific publications. It includes a complete index to faculty by key words of research interest. Published biennially by the Office of Research, the latest edition of CORE (2000) profiles faculty investigators. It is distributed to 450 school and department administrators of UT-Houston, heads of other UT System components, local universities, and governmental and private funding agencies.

Distinctions

This monthly newspaper is published for faculty, staff, students, house staff and community leaders by the Office of Public Affairs. Articles emphasize the university’s faculty, research and philanthropic support. The tabloid-size publication is distributed across campus and mailed to the university’s supporters.

Fact Book
This informational book is an annual publication produced by the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness that includes descriptive and statistical information about the university. Copies are available from the office or can be accessed on the Web.

The Faculty Guide
This guide contains information on the history, working environment, resources and services offered by UT-Houston, as well as an overview of institutional policies and procedures that affect faculty members. It is distributed to current faculty members at the time of publication as well as new faculty members recruited after publication.

Funding Futures
This monthly document is a publication of the Office of Research listing deadlines of agencies funding biomedical and behavioral research. It contains short articles on related subjects, announces workshops and profiles funding programs. Eleven hundred copies are distributed to faculty, departments and administrators; biomedical sciences faculty at other universities; UT System components; and community groups.

Graphic & Editorial Standards & Guidelines

This resource publication provides graphic and editorial guidelines and information concerning the various UT-Houston logos and correct logo usage for publications and promotional items, stationery design specification standards and the correct forms of the university name. The editorial portion of the publication also contains guidelines for mandatory phrases such as the Equal Employment Opportunity compliance statement. The publication and logos for downloading are available on the Webt or on CD, which may be ordered by contacting Brenda Enard in the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness.

The Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOOP)
The HOOP contains UT-Houston policies, procedures and guidelines in accordance with the University of Texas Regent’s Rules and Regulations. The HOOP is published electronically by the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness. The policies are updated on the Web as needed and employees that subscribe to the HOOP listserv receive notice of updates. The HOOP can be found on the Web.

Health Leader
This online health information service from the Office of Public Affairs posts consumer-health articles twice a week on the Web on topics related to medical research, personal health, fitness, nutrition and mental well-being. Subscribers receive free emails twice a week updating them about the newest articles in Health Leader. The Web site also offers links to the Health Science Center’s health service providers and to several interactive health calculators.

The Leader
This monthly tabloid-size newspaper recognizes events and achievements and communicates policy and administrative information. Produced by the Office of Public Affairs, it is distributed across campus for faculty, staff, students and house staff. A monthly email message alerts students to items of special interest and provides a link to the online version.

Leading the Way to Better Health
This brochure offers a quick overview of the university, each of its schools and the Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases. Helpful telephone numbers and email addresses are provided for donors, student applicants, prospective patients, job seekers and groups seeking speakers.

Medical School Facts
Facts is a brochure published every two years, providing a variety of data about the school, including student enrollment, graduates, residents, faculty, staff, research areas and expenditures, inpatient services and outpatient clinics. It also includes a map of the Texas Medical Center and the names of administrative officials, department chairs, division and program directors and the holders of endowed chairs, professorships and lectureships.

News on the Go

This electronic news service from the Office of Public Affairs provides email updates to faculty, staff, students and house staff several times a week. It provides a timely vehicle for promoting events and announcing major university and individual accomplishments, appointments, policies and other administrative matters.

Progress

Progress is a full-color, (award-winning) quarterly magazine, with a distribution of about 10,000. It is distributed to a wide audience, including business and civic leaders, health professionals, government leaders and those interested in advances in mental health care. Topics include issues related to mental illness and mental health, research and care, education and social issues.

Respiratory Protection

Safety Manuals: Radiation, Chemical, Biological, and Physical Safety; Emergency Response Plan; and Respiratory Protection
These six documents describe the appropriate methods for handling potentially hazardous agents and work situations within UT-Houston and are intended to assist personnel in maintaining a safe, healthful working and learning environment. Manuals are published by Environmental Health and Safety and Facility Operations. The manuals are regularly reviewed by the corresponding institutional safety committee. Copies may be obtained from Environmental Health and Safety or Facility Operations.

Scoop
Scoop is a weekly internal publication of the Medical School with a circulation of 2,800. Scoop reaches faculty, staff, students and leaders of community and national organizations. It is produced by the Office of Community Affairs and Public Education and presents timely articles of medical interest to both the academic and general interest reader. It can be accessed on the Web.

The Staff Guide

Strategic Directions

The UT-Houston Strategic Directions documents are renewed and disseminated on a biennial basis as part of the ongoing UT-Houston strategic planning process. The plan incorporates a six-year “rolling” slate of major institutional goals for the planning period as well as tactics launched in support of accomplishment of the goals. Consult the Office of Planning & Institutional Effectiveness with questions. The most current iteration of Strategic Directions is on the Web.

The Student Guide
This on-line resource document is specifically geared for students’ interests and describes UT-Houston, the Texas Medical Center and Houston. The Web site also contains links to student policies and student resources on the Web.

Women’s Health NewsWatch
This newsletter is a cooperative venture of the Office of Women’s Health at the Medical School and the Office of Public Affairs to highlight health news and issues of concern to women. The four-page newsletter is distributed four times a year to about 5,500 women in the Houston area and to female employees at UT-Houston.

UT-Houston Student News and Views

News and Views is the student newsletter for UT-Houston. The newsletter is published bimonthly September through May by the Student InterCouncil (SIC) and contains articles pertaining to student issues and concerns. The newsletter is composed by the editor-in-chief, who is an elected officer of the SIC, and his/her editorial staff. All students may submit articles. Once published, the newsletter is distributed to each school’s Student Affairs Office and is made available throughout the campus. It can also be found electronically on the Web.
