THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT HOUSTON

Meeting Minutes

September 28, 2004:

Dr. Christine Koerner, Out-going President addressed the members first.
She listed the goals of AWF and highlighted the accomplishments of AWF during the 2003-2004 academic year under her presidency.
During the past year AWF hosted the following events:

1. A celebratory gathering honoring women faculty who had been tenured or promoted.
2. A presentation by Ms. Wilson on emotional IQ as a requirement for success in today’s scientific/medical professions.
3. A program on ELAM for women interested in leadership positions.
4. A day-long workshop by Ms. Janet Bickel on Profession development and mentorship.

In addition, a panel of senior AWF board members worked hard behind-the-scene to represent female and male faculty to the various deans of the Health Science Center with intent to increase (a) retention of talented faculty, (b) seek ways in which qualified faculty within the HSC could be appointed to endowed positions.

Dr. Koerner thanked the board members who served to support the goals of the AWF and Dr. Patricia Starck of the School of Nursing for her special role and advice provided to the AWF board. She noted that AWF, an independent organization, is gathering momentum and memberships since we have opened our door to women faculty and fellows of all TMC institutions. Dr. Starck recommended that newly appointed faculty also be welcomed to the TMC and AWF during the Promotions and Tenure celebration in October. Dr. Koerner welcomed the new president, Drs. Catherine Ambrose, Marilu Berry (President Elect), Carmen Dessauer (Secretary), and Heidi Kaplan (Treasurer).

Appointment of new board members was passed unanimously by a show of hands. The meeting continued with discussions led by Dr. Paula O’Neill (Program Committee Chair), Dr. Jasenka Demirovic (Membership Committee), and Dr. Heidi Kaplan (Treasurer).

Dr. O’Neill conference scheduled for Feb 11, 2005. Dr. Demirovic called to have one representative from each school and announced that full memberships (faculty) are $25/year while associate memberships (postdoctoral and medical fellows) are $15/year. AWF members may attend all association hosted events for free during the year.

The treasurer’s report for the preceding year showed that AWF has a net balance of $8934.34. In 2003-2004, the association raised $4490 through memberships and contributions towards the conference (Department of Surgery, Dr. Max Buja, Dr. Schultz). Expenses totaled $4265.32 – spent towards the different AWF sponsored events (above) and board meetings.

Dr. Catherine Ambrose (President, 2004-2005) laid out a plan that included repeating the Tenure and Promotions celebration in October, a large conference in February, and monthly meetings. Drs. Koerner and Ambrose proposed that an at-large member from each institution of the Texas Medical Center shall attend the board meetings to voice the needs and opinions of the various participating institutions. Members in attendance, representing UT-Houston Medical School, UT- School of Nursing, UT-Dental Branch Houston, UT-School of Public Health, and Prairie View A&M School of Nursing, agreed with these proposals. AWF members now come from all these schools and Rice University.

As the out-going secretary of AWF, I (Sudha Veeraraghavan) wish to thank the board and the association for the pleasure of serving you all and for everything I have learned during the past year. I have come to know and network with many more faculty in just one year than would have been possible otherwise.

As a continuing AWF member, I look forward to the various activities planed for this year. These will provide opportunities for countless faculty and fellows (women and men, new and established) to learn about career development, leadership building, networking, and education, while influencing the policies and practices of our institutions. Women faculty and fellows from the various institutions of the TMC are invited to join AWF.

October 1, 2003:

The Promotion & Tenure Luncheon on October 1, 2003 attracted a large group of AWF members and non-members to recognize and honor recently promoted and/or tenured women faculty of University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. The meeting opened with remarks from the new president of AWF, Drs. Christine Koerner, Catherine Ambrose, and Katherine Loveland. The following women faculty were recognized for their achievement: Drs. Karen J. Goodman, Cynthia L. Chappell, Elaine Symanski, Rosemary Kozar, Diane Novy, Susan M. Ramin, Judith A. Headley, Sandra L. Upchurch, Susan Seybold, Lisa Thomas, Alice Chuang, Elizabeth Dial, Rita Swinford, Margaret Uthman, Katheleen Reeve, Terese Verklan, and Joanne Hickey. Dr. Loveland presented yellow roses to honor each of them.

Ms. Sherry M. Wilson, Director, Employee Assistance & Work/Life Programs addressed the group with a lecture on “Emotional Intelligence: The other key to success”. She talked about the importance of emotional intelligence in achieving success in leadership positions. She indicated that this concept, conceived by Daniel Goleman of New York Times, has taken strong root in corporate America and is on its way to becoming a requirement at other work places. Talking about some of the 25 emotional competencies Ms. Wilson emphasized that initiative, adaptability, social competence, influence, and empathy were essential for success in leadership positions. Ms. Wilson is a social worker by training. She conducts the course “Leading people in times of stress” at the Health Science Center. Ms. Wilson received a gift of appreciation for participating in the celebrations.

Dr. Christine Koerner closed the meeting with thanks to the attendees and everyone involved in organizing the gathering.
