COMMITTEE FOR THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN SUBJECTS
Guidelines
Chair
Designated by the President on recommendation from the Executive Vice
President for Research and Academic Affairs from the membership
Membership
Shall include at least fifteen individuals whose backgrounds shall be
varied to ensure adequate scientific and ethical review of all research.
They shall not be composed entirely of the same sex or race. They shall
include:

Four clinical scientists to represent each of the following disciplines:
Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry and Dentistry;

Two basic biomedical scientists;

Two social scientists;
-
One nurse;
-
One clergyman;
-
One representative of a non-scientific area;

Two members from outside the UT-Health Science Center Houston; and
-
One medicolegal member.

One or three years (can be re-appointed)
Charge
To ensure the Health Science Center's compliance with the procedures and
principles contained in Federal legislation and regulations relating to
the protection of human subjects in all research activities carried out
by units and personnel of The University of Texas Health Science Center
Houston. No research may be conducted prior to approval by the CPHS.
The Committee reports to the Executive Vice President for Research.
