Introduction
This intervention strategies guide was designed to address
the reading concepts assessed by the Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI)
for students in Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2. The concepts assessed
by the TPRI fall into the following domains:
- Phonemic Awareness--the ability to detect and
identify individual sounds within spoken words.
- Graphophonemic Knowledge--the recognition
of the letters of the alphabet and the understanding of sound-symbol
relationships.
- Reading Accuracy--the ability to
read grade-appropriate text accurately.
- Reading Comprehension--the understanding
of what has been read.
As the teacher administers the inventory portion of the TPRI, concepts
are recorded as "developed" and "still developing" on the Summary Sheet.
This intervention activities guide is designed to provide teachers with
ideas to use in planning lessons for students in the "still developing"
stage. Please refer to TPRI Components for examples of related areas of instruction in each
domain.
Within this guide, you will find a list of suggested activities. Some
of the activities listed under a task do not relate directly to the task
as seen on the TPRI, but they provide background instruction that is needed
to be successful with the task.
Activities for this collection were assembled from teaching experiences
as well as from the resources listed. This guide is a work in progress,
and we encourage teachers to send us their best ideas to incorporate into
future editions of the guide.
Students who do not make progress after using the ideas in this guide
may require further one-on-one interventions.
Included is a bibliography for further reading and examples.
