Model for Diagnosis

Phase 1:  Collecting Evidence

  • TPRI Screening & Inventory
  • Classroom Observations
  • Evidence from Instruction and Other Assessments

The use of informal data gathering will support teachers in the reading instruction provided to students. The TPRI is designed to supplement and facilitate teacher judgements, not replace them. Diagnostic decisions should be based on teacher observations, student work, and knowledge of the student.

Phase 2:  Decision Making

  • Determine Patterns of Strengths and Weaknesses

The performance of students on the Screening and Inventory Sections of the TPRI signals teachers to focus on the specific instructional needs of students.

Phase 3:  Instructional Decisions

  • Form an Implementation Plan
  • Determine Implementation Time

Information derived from the assessment will assist teachers in planning targeted instruction for students. Teachers assemble educational resources and deliver the most effective instruction possible for students.

Phase 4:  Collect More Information

  • Repeat Phases 1 to 3
