Life in Houston
Houston is a vibrant, diverse city of over 5,000,000 people. The city is in close proximity to the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, the Texas Hill country, and the East Texas piney woods. Multiple lakes are nearby for recreational activities, such as camping, hiking, biking, sailing, running, and participation in the active running or triathlon clubs of the area. For detailed information about Houston including housing, education, cost of living, etc, check out The Greater Houston Partnership website.

The city is home to one of the largest theater districts outside of Broadway in the United States. The Theater District — a 17-block area in the heart of downtown Houston — is home to Houston's eight world-class performing arts organizations, and the 130,000 square-foot Bayou Place entertainment complex contains restaurants, movies, plazas, and parks. Houston is one of only five cities in the United States with permanent professional resident companies in all of the major performing arts disciplines: opera, ballet, music, and theater. Houston also has an outstanding museum district located between the Medical Center and downtown, all connected by MetroRail, our light rail system.
Houston is also a place for sports lovers as it is the home to the Astros baseball team, the Houston Texans football team, the Houston Rockets basketball team, and many other semiprofessional and collegiate sports teams.
Houston is an easy travel destination, with Bush International Airport and Hobby airport providing travel services all over the world.
Our residents live throughout the metroplex and its suburbs. For more information on where to live, schools, and employment opportunities in the Houston area, please view the Useful Links page.
Some of our residents’ favorite things about Houston:
- I enjoy early morning runs at Memorial Park, the abundance of local restaurants, and going to an Astros game.
- It doesn't cost a lot to eat well and have fun!
- I love the museums and theatre district; there is always something to see.
- It's close to plenty of saltwater fishing areas.
- There is so much to do here! I love how easy it is to get to all the museums and parks near the Medical Center. I also love random Rice Village happy hours and the ridiculous amount of good restaurants here.
- Houston has a big city skyline and things to do, but small town Southern friendliness! Also: Specs, the food, the culture, the Heights Artcar Parade, and Shakespeare in the Park!
- It reminds me of home: hot, humid, and a hurricane every now and then.
- Mexican Food... mmmm... Mexican Food.
- Houston has all types of professional sports teams — MLB, NBA, NFL, etc.
- This place has everything. Great sports (Football, Soccer, Baseball, and Basketball), Museums, Theater, and great restaurants.
- Houston is first rate, with affordable realty, coupled with activities to suit anyone (me: offshore fishing; wife: shopping).
- Unless it involves snow, you can do it in or around Houston.
- We have the best food a city can offer!
