Miriam Aponte, M.D.,
is an Assistant Professor at the Harris County Psychiatric
Center and has devoted her career to helping adolescent and adult psychiatric
patients, particularly in the areas of substance abuse and the study of
post-traumatic stress disorder.
Aponte received her undergraduate training at the University of Panama
in Panama City (1971-73) and her medical degree from the University of
Panamas medical school in 1977. Aponte served several internships in Panama,
including at the Metropolitan Hospital Complex and the Manuel Amador Guerrero
Hospital in Colon City, Panama. She came to Houston in 1980 to serve a
four-year residency in psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine and was
appointed Chief Resident at the Baylor Psychiatric Clinic during her final
year of training.
In 1985, Aponte completed a fellowship in community psychiatry at Baylor
where she was assigned full-time at Northwest Mental Health Clinic of MHMRA.
and was responsible for the care of chronic psychiatric patients. Aponte
also served as medical director of a residential treatment center for adolescents
and later as Medical Director of the General Adult Psychiatric Unit at
West Oaks Hospital in Houston, where she was instrumental in the development
and ongoing coordination of an intense program for post-traumatic stress
disorders. She then served as a Staff Psychiatrist at the Warren State
Hospital and was promoted to Psychiatrist Supervisor for the Admission
Unit of the hospital in 1995. She joined the UT-Houston Medical School
in 1996. Additionally, Aponte maintained a private practice for nearly
a decade, providing general psychiatry care for adults and adolescents.
Aponte is a member of several professional organizations, including
the American Psychiatric Association, Houston Psychiatric Society, Texas
Society of Psychiatric Physicians and the Harris County Medical Society.
She also is a member of the Association of Women Psychiatrists, Greater
Houston Council of Family Violence and Hispanic Physicians of Houston.
