Frequently
Asked Questions
What
is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?
The
University of Texas Harris County Psychiatric Intensive Outpatient
Treatment Program is an intensive program designed to help
individuals reduce their symptoms while they continue to live
in the community. It provides a safe, supportive community
environment for those with mental illness who need professional
help to stabilize their mental or emotional problems. Individual
treatment programs are designed and provided by a multidisciplinary
team of therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists
and counselors. The program empowers patients to take responsibility
for their mental health well-being.
How
does Intensive Outpatient Treatment compare with other options?
Partial
Hospitalization fits into the continuum of care as the option
that combines the best facets of care (strict criteria and
intensive care) with the best of outpatient care (schedule
flexibility and lower costs). Treatment may be arranged within
the framework of the recommended minimum number of hours per
week, so that patients may interact with family, friends and
community and/or resume work/school.
Who
might benefit from Intensive Outpatient Treatment?
Persons
in treatment who in the view of their physicians are ready
to leave the hospital but who need more help than traditional
outpatient treatment provides
- Persons
who would benefit from monitoring during their adjustment
to medications
- Persons
who no longer need full hospitalization but need additional
intensive professional help before they can progress further
in outpatient treatment
- Persons
who need to gain increased stabilization of their mental
illness
- Persons
who need help to maintain independence and responsibility
for their lives
