Inpatient Care

Excellent patient care is the primary concern of the University of Texas Harris County Psychiatric Center, an acute care, public psychiatric hospital with a 250-bed treatment capacity. Patients are treated by a highly qualified, multidisciplinary staff--compromised of psychiatrists, non-psychiatric physicians (including consultants, interns and pediatricians), psychiatric residents, psychologists, nurses, social workers, activity and music therapists, pharmacists, dietitians and chaplains--that provides individualized care.

There are several areas of care:

Children and adolescents with personality disorders, attention deficit disorders, problems related to physical handicaps and severe psychosomatic problems.
Adults between the ages of 18 and 50 with affective disorders, clinical depression, schizophrenia or personality disorders.

The average length of stay is nine days for adult patients and thirteen days for children and adolescents. Those in need of longer-term care may be referred to Rusk State Hospital

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School provides the medical expertise. The UT-Houston Health Science Center operates and staffs the facility.
