Offsite Backups

Purpose:

To maintain offsite copies of backup tapes for use in the event of a disaster in which all onsite computer equipment and backups are destroyed. Copies of LAN backups are stored offsite with a third party.

Procedure

Full backups of the LAN are taken daily, with the LAN backup usually completing at approximately 3:30am Once the backups are complete the following steps are performed.

  1. Remove backup tape from LAN tape drive and from Alpha tape drive.
  2. Place both tapes in an orange secure tackle box for each day and address to HMB 12.120 of Data Mgmt at the HMB Building. Place box on receptionist's counter in secured room.
  3. Courier will pick up the box at roughly 11:00am and will deliver to HMB 12.120, usually on the 11:30am mail delivery.
  4. We will contact Data Mgt to retrieve tapes for the next day for pick-up at 12:30p.m.

Data Restore

To restore lost data the following procedure needs to be followed:

  1. Fill out DPSR to get lost or corrupted data restored.
  2. Server team calls Data Mgmt to retrieve tape backup.
  3. Courier will pick up box
  4. Data is restored to server
  5. Courier returns tape back to Data Mgmt Center

Test Restore

To test the backups that are taken of critical files (Example: Sunrise database file) will be restored from tape once every 6 months, this time frame will be shortened if we experience problems that require more frequent testing. Logs and screen shots of this test will be maintained in the server room for audit purposes.

Tape Expiry

Tape expiry is set on the tape pools for 60 months or 250 rewrites, which ever comes first. Once a tape has been expired, it will be removed from the tape pool and destroyed and a new tape is inserted into the backup pool

Siemens

Siemens system is hosted off site and backups conducted daily.
