Importance

All hospital employees responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients must be competent to perform these tasks in order to deliver quality patient care.

This table describes the competency requirements for UTHCPC employees:

Core

All hospital employees, including contract employees, must be proficient in the following:

Patient rights

Fire safety

Infection control

Hazardous materials

Ethics

Compliance

Supervisor assesses initial proficiency in core competency areas through New Employee Orientation

Supervisor or designee determines and documents core competencies prior to completion of probation and on an annual basis

Additional

Each department establishes and requires additional competencies dependent on duties performed.

Note: Competency requirements are guided by job descriptions and are age-specific when applicable.

Department manager incorporates annual competency demonstration criteria into minimum training requirements

Competency report

When
Hospital-Wide Education prepares and submits a competency report to the Governing Body annually.

What
The competency report includes a documented plan for improvement and education of employees failing to meet competency requirements.
