As a security-sensitive institution, UTHCPC requires criminal background checks for all new employees, students and volunteers prior to be given access to the hospital.

Criminal background check

This table describes the UTHCPC employee criminal background check process:

Stage

Description

Human Resources submits a security check request to the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD) and Sterling Info Systems, Inc. on all UTHCPC employees and volunteers upon acceptance of position.

UTPD and Sterling Info Systems, Inc. completes security background checks as appropriate.

UTPD and/or Sterling Info Systems, Inc. notifies the university’s main Human Resources (HR) of any verified criminal background within 2-4 days after request of the background check. UTPD provides final risk assessment of the applicant to HR.

HR notifies the UTHCPC Director of Personnel Systems Management when such a risk exists.

If the candidate is considered a risk, the hiring manager is notified by the HR. HR will also contact the candidate and rescind the job offer.

If, after the final review, the candidate is not considered a risk,the final assessment given by UTPD will be forwarded to HCPC Personnel Systems Management accompanied by the original report from Sterling Info Systems.

Notation is made in the Sterling Info Systems, Inc. database upon receiving a clear criminal background check.

The university also requires a criminal background check for anyone being considered for a status change due to promotion, new position obtained through the university's employment application process, change in faculty rank or change in faculty tenure status.
