This topic explains what departments must continue to provide services on holidays.
Compensation payments follow standard state regulations. For departments who must work on full closure holidays listed below, the department head may elect one of the two following options: (1) require the employee to accrue the holiday to be taken at a later date; (2) allow the employees to choose to accrue the holiday or be paid for the holiday. Accrued holiday time must be taken within 12 months of accruing the holiday. Any accrued holiday time will be paid to the employee if not taken within a 12 month period.
This table describes the level of service necessary on the two types of holidays:
Type of Holiday |
Description |
Level of Coverage |
Full Closure |
Holidays considered so traditional that UTHCPC gives staff time off if at all possible provided they are designated as holidays by UT. See current UTHSC-H holiday calendar for current fiscal year full closure holidays. |
Minimal coverage |
Partial Closure |
Skeleton Crew Holidays See current UTHSC-H holiday calendar for current fiscal year skeleton crew holidays. |
More coverage than core holidays, but less staff than regular work days |
The department manager of each department that must provide holiday coverage determines the exact holiday staffing necessary to cover the needs of the hospital.
Documentation: The department manager documents the specific staffing required in the departmental policy and procedure manual.
This table lists which departments must have functional staffing on holidays:
