This topic explains how to handle a breakdown or accident.

Towing services

Tow all UTHCPC vehicles to the contracted wrecker service's facility.

Reference: See the Emergency Procedure in the vehicle for the name and phone number of the contracted wrecker service.

Handling a vehicle breakdown

Follow these steps to handle the situation when the UTHCPC vehicle you are driving breaks down:

After normal working hours

The contracted wrecker service.

Instruct the contracted wrecker service to tow the vehicle to their facility.

Inform Transportation/Courier Services of the situation on the following work day.

Caution

Do not admit negligence, fault, or guilt. Do not commit the State of Texas or UTHCPC.

Handling an accident

Follow these steps to handle the situation when you have an accident on or off campus:

Exception: You are excused from performing the duties in this procedure if you are injured in the accident and unable to function.

Is anyone injured?

If yes, assist in obtaining medical attention for the injured person(s) if possible and immediately notify the UTHHSC Police Department (713) 792-2890.

If no, go to Step 2.

Take the appropriate action to warn other motorists of the accident site.

Is the accident on campus?

If yes, go to Step 4.

If no, notify the local law enforcement agency.

Notify the following as soon as possible after the accident, regardless of the extent of the damage:

UTHHSC Police Department

Obtain the following information from the other party(s) involved in the accident:

Name

Address

Telephone number

Vehicle number

License number

Insurance company and agent

Attempt to obtain the following information about any witness(es) to the accident:

Name

Address

Telephone number

Inform the other party(s) in the accident that the UTHCPC vehicle is insured and provide him/her with the name of the insurance company.

Reference: See the copy of the policy inside the vehicle.

Complete the appropriate accident forms within 24-hours after the accident.

Required by: The Texas Department of Public Safety and the UTHCPC Insurance carrier

Submit the forms to the Transportation/Courier Services Department.
