This topic provides information about the actions taken in response to extraordinary infection conditions.

Responsibilities

The Infection Control Officer has the authority to institute infection control measures.

The Infection Control Nurse documents and follows-up on extraordinary infection control measures taken.

Actions taken

Actions taken to control infectious disease situations may include the following areas:

Patient care

Staff

Sources of evidence

The following lists some, but not all, of the sources of evidence of extraordinary infection conditions:

Quality and Standards Department review

Nursing units' routine surveillance data

Laboratory reports

Results of studies requested by the Infection Control Committee

Chart Review

Staff infection control measures

Consultation
The Infection Control Officer may choose to consult with the Director of HSC Health Services about any infection control situation involving staff members.

Documentation
The Infection Control Nurse maintains documentation of the education and special requirements of any infection control measures involving staff in the Human Resources or Nursing personnel file.
When
: There is no concurrent involvement of staff infection control measures.

Anyone finding evidence of extraordinary infection conditions in the hospital, immediately notifies the Infection Control Officer or designee.

Constitute an emergency situation

The process continues with Stage 3.

Do not constitute an emergency situation

The Infection Control Officer coordinates actions with the appropriate clinical and administrative personnel. The process continues with Stage 5.

The Infection Control Officer prescribes immediate measures to the staff directly involved.

The Infection Control Officer presents the measures taken to the concerned clinical and administrative personnel at the first possible opportunity.

The Infection Control Nurse oversees documentation and follow-up.

Note: Nursing progress notes reflect the implementation response to treatment.
