Patient Responsibilities

Every patient in UTHCPC retains all rights, benefits, responsibilities and privileges guaranteed by the constitution and laws of the United States and the State of Texas unless otherwise adjudged. Because clear, consistent communication improves patient satisfaction and patient well-being and promotes focused care, a listing of "Patient Responsibilities" will be given to all patients upon admission and posted on all hospital units.

Employee responsibilities

Each employee is responsible for supporting the patient rights as well as encouraging the patient to fulfill his/her responsibilities through the following:

Individual interactions

Role modeling

Caution

Employees failing to assist in exercising patient rights or using coercive or punitive methods of obtaining the patient's compliance may result in a supervisory action.

Patient responsibilities

As a patient you are responsible to:

Provide (to the best of your ability) accurate and complete information regarding hospitalizations, all medications (including herbal and over the counter), and other matters relating to your health. Where guardianships are in process, the responsible party is encouraged to provide relevant information.

Follow the treatment plan recommended by your treatment team.

Keep appointed treatment schedules.

Provide information about your advanced directive if you have one

Treat those providing care with dignity and respect.

Keep nursing informed about your comfort level and need for pain relief measures

Know and follow hospital rules and regulations affecting patient care and patient conduct and follow all laws of the State of Texas

Never bring a weapon into the hospital.

Never hurt or threaten another patient, family member or member of staff.

Never bring alcohol or unauthorized drugs into the hospital.

Refrain from sexual activity of any nature while in hospital.

Control noise, smoking and the number of your visitors.

Use only medications prescribed for you.

Be considerate of the rights of other patients and hospital personnel.

Understand that the hospital is not responsible for your personal property or for your valuables kept on your person, unless they are received and stored for you by hospital personnel . We urge you to send home all valuables and clothing you will not need while hospitalized.

Be respectful of the property of others and hospital property.

Talk with Patient Relations, your nurse, or a member of staff if you are dissatisfied with care and/or service.

Accept responsibility for your actions should you refuse treatment or should you choose not to follow prescribed treatment planning
