Admission to Inpatient Unit from Outpatient Programs

Patients from the outpatient programs may require admission into the inpatient unit.

Readmitted patients

Patient Registration staff follows the policy for re-admissions.

Patient information

The Outpatient (OP) Clinician gives a verbal report about the patient to the registration staff and assigned inpatient clinician about the following (during clinic hours). Pertinent information is also available online:

Patient's condition

Reason for admission

Current medications

Any other information necessary to begin immediate care

Process

This table describes the process of admitting a patient to inpatient unit from OP:

Stage	Description
1	The OP physician determines if a patient meets the criteria for inpatient hospitalization.
2	The OP physician calls the UTHCPC Medical Director for approval of a direct University of Texas admission, see procedure on UT Admissions.
3	The OP staff calls the Patient Registration office and requests a bed for a direct University of Texas (UT) admission. If... Then... The patient agrees to voluntary readmission OP staff: Has the patient sign voluntary admission papers Calls the Patient Registration office to request a bed for a direct UT admission The patient refuses voluntary readmission The OP physician and primary therapist: File a request for involuntary commitment with the court Notify Patient Registration
4	Patient Registration staff assigns a bed and notifies the OP staff.
5	The OP clinician physician calls the assigned inpatient clinician and gives a verbal report about the patient during clinic hours.
6	The OP attending physician's last progress note is available online.
7	During non-clinical hours the inpatient registration staff notifies the assigned inpatient unit that the patient is a HCPC outpatient. Inpatient unit staff accesses relevant clinical information online.
