Title: Patient Diversion

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to define mechanism for defining capacity limitations should the hospital be full and unable to receive patients for a period of time.

Procedure:

1. Only the administrator on call may place the hospital on diversion status. Administrator is to be notified by administrator on call when decision about diversion is being considered.

2. The Director of Patient Services or designee or Nursing supervisor will be consulted regarding the decision that the hospital be placed on diversion status.

3. The Director of Patient Services or designee and the Nursing supervisor will explore all opportunities before requesting diversion-the director will examine all units' bed availability and consider all discharges that are planned for the day.

4. The following conditions would be considered reason to place hospital on diversion status:

Emergency evacuation is occurring due to internal or external emergency.
All available beds are filled with patients. (Some beds may be blocked for acuity reasons)
There are insufficient staff resources to care for inpatients and those planned for admission (i.e. hazardous weather situation with heavy call ins, staff recall process has been insufficient to support the admission of additional patients)
The number of medically or acutely ill patients exceeds hospital ability to provide service i.e. the number of one to one patients is in excess of 4 at one time.

5. The hospital will be placed on diversion for 8hrs or less. If longer than 8 hrs is needed, the supervisor will need to notify the administrator on call to seek an additional 8hrs until the crisis has passed.

6. The Nursing supervisor or Director of Patient Services or designee will be responsible for recording the status on the admission log.

7. When the hospital is on diversion status, the constables will be notified so that they take patients to other local psychiatric facilities. Walk-in patients will be stabilized and referred to area facilities as needed.
