Philosophy of Limiting Seclusion/Restraint Use

Policy

Date of Last Review: 5/19/08
SME: Associate Director of Nursing

The patient care at Harris County Psychiatric Center is based on both the needs of the patients and the hospital's mission, vision and values. We believe the patient to be the most important person in the hospital. To this end, we are accountable to our patients to provide care that is cognizant of safe and effective outcomes.

We consider seclusion/restraint an aspect of care that is high risk and problem prone. We acknowledge that restrictive measures are considered necessary last resorts to help patients reestablish control of their behavior. Harris County Psychiatric Center commitment is to utilize the least restrictive alternative thus limiting the use of seclusion/restraint through performance improvement.
