5

Grasp the base of the probe with your thumb and forefinger and withdraw the probe from the storage compartment.

Result: The thermometer function comes on.

6

Supporting the bottom of the box, insert the thermometer probe completely and firmly into the probe cover box.

Reason: To ensure a secure fit.

Measuring patient temperature

Nursing personnel follow these steps to measure patient temperature using the IVAC thermometer:

Step

Action

1

Instruct the patient to open his/her mouth slightly.

2

Gently insert the probe tip into the patient's mouth.

3

Carefully slide the probe tip under the front of the tongue, along the gum-line, to the sublingual pocket.

4

Hold the probe gently during the rest of the procedure.

Do not: Allow the patient reposition the probe.

5

Watch the tissue contact indicator on the right-side of the temperature display.

Reason: To ensure that the probe tip has contact with the tissue at all times.

6

Read the patient's temperature on the temperature display when you hear the audible tone.

Timing issues:

The temperature reading appears approximately 25-seconds after you insert the probe.

The patient's temperature blinks on the temperature display for about 20-seconds.

Result: The thermometer automatically shuts off.

Completing the task

Nursing personnel follow these steps to complete the task:

Step

Action

1

Gently remove the probe from the patient's mouth.

2

Position the thermometer over a waste container and press the ejection button at the base of the probe.

Result: The used probe cover falls into the waste container.

3

Return the probe to its storage well.

Result: The thermometer automatically resets for the next temperature reading.
