Purpose:

To define policy for administering vaccines as required by SB1330.

Policy: It the policy of UT-HCPC Inpatient and Outpatient services to offer influenza and pneumonia vaccines to patients age 65 years and older in accordance with Senate Bill 1330 that states that it is mandatory for hospitals, end-stage renal disease facilities and physicians’ offices to offer influenza and pneumonia vaccines to patients age 65 years and older. If vaccinations are unavailable, the patients’ requesting vaccination will be referred to a community source.
Procedure: Patients 65 years of age and older will be informed of the opportunity to receive the influenza vaccine during the normal flu vaccine period. This usually runs between October and March, when the flu season is over. Flue vaccine is given annually.

Patients 65 years of age and older will be informed of the opportunity to receive the Pneumonia vaccine year round. The pneumonia vaccine should be given once every five years. Patients will be asked if they have had a pneumonia vaccine within the past five years, and if not, they will be offered a vaccine.

Patients who request the vaccination will be given the Vaccine Information Sheet (VIS), for each vaccine to review. Once the patient has reviewed the VIS, they will be asked to sign a consent form (Consent for Treatment Influenza and/or Pneomonia Shots) prior to receiving the vaccine.

The nurse giving the injection will record the manufacturer’s name and the Lot number on the consent form, which will be kept with the patient’s chart. The RN will document administration on the medication administration record (MAR) for each vaccine given. If a patient requests vaccination against influenza between October and March or a pneumococcal vaccine at any time and HCPC is unable to provide this service, the patient will be referred to The City of Houston Health Department Community Clinics listed below:
