Policy
The purpose of this policy/procedure is to document steps that should be used to when the Hospital phone system is down or not working properly.
Procedure
| 1 | If the phone system is down, a call should be placed to UT HelpDesk by the nursing supervisor or the operator letting them know that our phone system is down. UT is contracted to resolve and diagnose the issue and take necessary steps to resolve the problem |

| 2 | Operator will page Richard Montanye or Shamus Sadai |
| 3 | Operator will alert the charge nurse(s) as well as the Nursing Supervisor or make an overhead announcement if possible. |
| 4 | The unit(s) will be expected to keep their walkie-talkie(s) in a “On” position once notified until phones are operable (walkie-talkie must be maintained on channel 2). Walkie-talkies will be placed @ the nurse’s desk for the ease of hearing and use. |
| 5 | The unit(s) will utilize the walkie- talkie for urgent and emergent communication only (i.e. Special Team, 911, and other codes, to communicate with other units/department(s), to communicate with the Nursing Supervisor and other administrative personnel, etc.,) |
| 6 | The Nursing Supv. will have access to a walkie-talkie as well as a cellular phone. The cellular phone will be utilized for external communication ( i.e. 911, Ben Taub, Administrator-on- call, On-call pharmacist, etc.,) Cell phone will be located in the Nursing Supervisor’s office. | 7 | Pt. Registration and Unit 1B will each have access to a walkie -talkie. |
| 8 | On-call residents may be accessed through text message via beeper. Via e-mail, unit staff will send an e-mail to 7139050606@archwireless.net,specify request/need. Please do not forget to include the unit. Resident will be provided a walkie-talkie. |
