Management of Information Systems Fire Plan

Introduction

Date of Last Review 6/6/07
SME: Director of Management Information Systems

Members of the department will comply with the hospital fire plan and will become familiar with the departmental fire plan. Department staff shall also attend hospital inservices on fire safety.

Fire Detection and Alarms

HCPC has smoke detectors located throughout the facility that will trigger the automatic fire alarm, if activated. The HCPC internal fire alert designation is termed "CODE RED". The phone number to call is RACE (7223).

The fire alarm has both audio and visual components. The audio alarm is a loud, continuous sounding horn. The visual alarm is a blinking light inside a white plastic sign (with "FIRE" printed on it in red) mounted on the upper wall.

HCPC also has fire alarm pull boxes (red and black with "FIRE" in silver) that will activate the alarm system. The alarm box is activated by pulling down the bar (with white letters that say "PULL DOWN") and release handle.

The two closest fire alarms for the MIS rooms are as follows:

> near the end of the dock corridor on the left-hand wall

> in the elevator lobby by the door to the stairs

> inside computer room (2A13) on right side of door

> visual alarm in the MIS staff room (1A58) on left side of door

> visual alarm in the MIS staff room (1A47) on left side of door

Fire Exits

Each fire exit has a lighted ceiling-mounted "EXIT" sign above it. Fire exit stairways are located at each elevator lobby, at the end of each main corridor, and on each patient care unit.

The fire exit for the department is at the end of the dock corridor.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers for the department are located as follows:

- one in the MIS staff room (1A47) next to the entry door

- one in the MIS staff room (1A58) other side of the entry door

- one in the outer computer room (2A13)other side of the entry door

Remember the PASS guidelines for using the extinguisher:

Pull the pin

Aim the nozzle

Squeeze the handle

Sweep the fire

Fire Suppression

The HCPC datacenter is protected by an Intergen system. There is also a wet system in place to protect the building if temperature levels are exceeded. Procedures on the use of the Intergen system are posted and Simplex/Grinnel has trained MIS staff on the use of the system and control panel. Fire alarms are monitored by UT Police located on site and remotely. Fire Drills are are conducted quarterly for all staff.

Fire Situations

In the event of a fire emergency safety of individuals is of utmost importance.

If a fire is discovered prior to the alarm sounding, assess the situation. If the fire cannot be extinguished immediately, sound the alarm and alert the immediate staff. Exit the area, closing the door behind you and exit the building. Do not use the elevator during a fire alarm.

If the fire is a small fire and can be extinguished, use the closest fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

If the fire alarm sounds and the location of the fire is not known, close the door and standby for further instruction. If instructed to leave the work area, close the door after leaving the office and calmly proceed to the contract parking lot across from HCPC. If a "CODE RED, ALL CLEAR" is announced, return to normal duty.

In the event the alarm sounds while a staff member is on a patient care unit, the specific Fire Safety Plan for the unit will be followed.

Evacuation Due to Fire

In case of evacuation and if there is sufficient time, an orderly shutdown of the Alpha and LAN equipment computer will be performed. This will take roughly 10 minutes. See Alpha and Lan Shutdown procedures for details.
