Safety Review of Proposed Acquisitions

Proposed acquisitions for UTHCPC must meet specific fire safety requirements for the protection of the patient population as well as staff, and to comply with regulatory guidelines.

Department manager duties

Department managers are responsible for obtaining a safety review of proposed acquisitions.

Purpose: So that UTHCPC meets NFPA 101, The Life Safety Code (LSC), JCAHO standards, and any City or State fire codes that apply.

Safety review

The Safety Office & Facilities Management must review the following items to identify issues related to fire safety:

Bedding

Window drapes or other curtains

Furnishings

Decorations

Wastebaskets

Other equipment

Note: When required, the review evaluates each item's flame-resistant capability.

Safety office duties

The Safety Office must review items as follows:

Heat-generating combustible materials

Placement of equipment close to heat sources

Flame-resistant coatings and coverings
Reason
: Must be maintained to retain their effectiveness

Failure to obtain review

Failure to obtain safety review and approval will result in the items being returned to the vendor. The department must pay any restocking fee or other charges for returned merchandise.
